Now that interns are getting paid for work done, and medical providers will be paid for services once considered “charity care”, it seems the tradition of volunteerism is soon going to be out the window.

It sounds to me like he knew the law and volunteered just so he could sue later.
All these frivolous lawsuits have one thing in common, a judge who reviews the so-called petition or case and allows it to go forward through the court system. Judges without exception are lawyers to begin with, and with lawyers common sense and reality are strange concepts. Not to mention it is an industry which lawyers perpetuate for there gain. Revamping the dysfunctional legal “system” is the only way change will occur.
