After suing the City of Birmingham for being allegedly hit and kicked by police officers after a high-speed chase, an Alabama man received a $1,000 settlement from the city.
The man’s lawyers? They received a whopping $459,000, which includes “$100,000 for expenses and $359,000 in fees,” according to Reuters.
Yes, you read that correctly: The alleged victim is receiving only 1/460th of his lawsuit settlement.
Whether or not you agree with the man’s lawsuit – doesn’t it seem ridiculous that the plaintiffs’ lawyers, rather than the alleged victim, are receiving such a lopsided percentage of this large, taxpayer-funded settlement?
