Recently, a California judge ruled that any business selling coffee must display a warning label that coffee contains acrylamide, a chemical that may cause cancer. The lawsuit was brought against 90 coffee companies under California’s controversial Prop. 65, which requires businesses with 10 or more employees to put warning labels on various products to let people know they may have been exposed to chemicals that might cause cancer or birth defects.

But organizations like the National Cancer Institute have suggested that there is no evidence acrylamide causes cancer.

Giving plaintiffs’ lawyers free rein to sue over java isn’t justice—it’s just an easy payday for them and a bad deal for California.
