Michael Abbondanza owns the Riverbend Eatery in Bailey, Colorado. But he also carries another title besides small business owner: lawsuit abuse victim.

Michael was the victim of an abusive Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuit soon after he opened up his restaurant.

The lawsuit claimed that the restaurant had several minor violations, such as a mirror being too high. Within an hour, Michael had fixed the violations. But the lawsuit didn’t go away. Instead, Michael was told he could pay $15,000 to the plaintiff who claimed he found the violations.

Michael decided to fight the lawsuit at a tremendous personal and financial cost. It put undue burdens on his business and his family. He had to lay off 20 employees and shut down his restaurant for a year and a half.

Michael is now sharing his story to bring awareness to the effects these predatory lawsuits have on small business owners.
